Edgar Degas was born in 1834 into an affluent Paris banking family. He studied at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts. Degas favorite subjects included scenes from the world of entertainment, the ballet and later from everyday life. Whilst often associated with the Impressionist Movement Degas developed his own very distinctive style, although he did exhibit with them on several occasions. However, in contrast to his impressionist colleagues, Degas preferred to work in a studio where he made sketches of his subjects on the spot and then created the painting later in his studio. In 1872 whilst visiting relatives in Louisiana, he painted The Cotton Exchange at New Orleans (finished 1873). This is the only painting to be acquired by a museum in his lifetime. . During the war with Germany in 1870-1871 Degas served in the French army and later in life his eyesight deteriorated and he focused on a wide variety of mediums and techniques including printmaking and sculpting. When he died, Degas left more than 2000 oil paintings and pastels and 150 sculptures
